Listening to Miami 1974 on sirius the boys are ripping a Greatest Story Ever told when out of the blue Donna jumps in mid way with some of the most horrific sounds ever made. Seriously, I thought my neighbor was being attacked by a rottweiler.

I don't think Rhino pays alot of attention to what a 3' flaming leprechaun has to say about ANYTHING! Hear that?

The JGB Don't Let Go Live album is worth keeping Donna in as well. I wonder why the Dead Movie Soundtrack didn't have as much Donna like the rest of '74?

Oh, she's there singing on all the songs but the official soundtrack mix minimizes her contribution, is what I was pointing out, in response to the guy who was suggesting she couild be edited. I'm suggesting that she has been, at least on that CD.

In fairness to DJ, I took another listen to that movie soundtrack - this is was released when they remastered the movie for DVD a few years back - it's been heavily remixed and sweetened, and it's not so much that she's edited OUT as that she's edited WELL. She contributes some really nice stuff to the He's Gone(s), Half-Step, and a few others, but is buried much deeper in the mix on the stuff she routinely destroyed, like Johnny B Goode, GDTRFB, etc. It works - it's mostly a good mix. Or maybe she put in a better performance because she was on camera -it always seemed like she could sing when she tried.
I'm still not a fan, but that CD is an acceptable level of 1974 DJ for me. 1976-1978 she seems to have calmed down a bit, but as far as 1973 and 1974 are concerned she still pisses me off. She's responsible for the destruction of more great music than Salieri. See comment above re: bag o'cats/wood chipper.

some history of donna.
Note: Donna Jean Godchaux also appears on numerous albums under her maiden
name, Donna Jean Thatcher. Before joining up the Dead, she was a backup
singer at the famed Muscle Shoals studios in Alabama. Donna sings on Percy
Sledge's "When A Man Loves A Woman". She also appears on Elvis Presley's "In
The Ghetto", "Suspicious Minds", "Cold Kentucky Rain", and "Long Black
Limousine" (along with members of the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd
as backup musicians). She was deleted from the final mix of the Rolling
Stones' "Gimme Shelter" (from "Let It Bleed") because it was felt that she
took the spotlight away from Mick Jagger's singing. Donna also sings backup
on Lowell George's band Little Feat song "Dixie Chicken" and on Gary
Rossington's band Lynyrd Skynyrd song "Sweet Home Alabama".

TB, heard a recent interview with her on the UCSC student station (their show Dead Serious was mentioned during the recent archival move) and she spoke about how she was the one that went to the hospital in 'Bama to show Percy the Billboard chart when the single rose up the charts - as Flo and Eddie might say "#1 with a bullet"!.

She also commented about how she couldn't stand to a listen to a lot of shows with the boys featuring her as it was so incredibly hard for her to hear herself with the wall of sound and that she, in her words, "shrieked". And then she laughed. She also said Jerry was the kindest, most intuitively intelligent, charismatic person she'd ever known.

I believe you are both right. Oneday someone will make a Donna filter. That person would be a millionaire. Oh I checked out some recent Donna stuff on the archive and personally that was one of the biggest mistakes i have ever made. lol

I will say, however, that there are times that Donna fits in quite well with the boys, usually in her harmonizing work. There is even a time or two when I don't mind her "improve" stuff. BUT, and I do mean BUT, her mind shredding howls in Playin' are some of the most painful, buzz stomping, spine curling, head blasting, joy killing sonic a-bombs I've ever heard.
